Bernard Holecek, 88, Breckenridge, MN passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral mass will be on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Breckenridge, MN with Father Kenneth Popp officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 1, 2010 from 4 pm to 7 pm with a Prayer Service at 7 PM and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Brushvale, MN.
Bernard was born on August 20, 1922 on the home farm near Brushvale, MN to Frank and Mary (Barina) Holecek. He grew up and attended rural school near Brushvale. He entered the US Army in January of 1945 and served during WWII at Okinawa. After his discharge from the service in 1946 he returned to Breckenridge and began working with the Great Northern Railroad. He started as a brakeman and later became a conductor.
On April 28, 1950 Bernard was united in marriage to Dolores Thuente at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Kent, MN and they lived their lives and raised their children in Breckenridge. He retired from the railroad in 1980.
Bernard was an active member in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Pro-Life Activities. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union and was active in the Breckenridge Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed spending times at the lake fishing, pulling skiers, and family gatherings. Bernard also enjoyed helping his children on home remodeling projects.
Bernard is survived by: His wife, Dolores, Breckenridge, MN; his children: Marilyn Grinols, Chaska, MN, Jane (Rick) Schaff, Coon Rapids, MN, James Holecek, Coeur D-alene, ID, David (Carolyn) Holecek, Thief River Falls, MN, Eileen (Ron) Malone, Wadena, MN; his fifteen grandchildren; his six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: His great-grandson, Ethan Ames; his brothers, Charles, Alfred, Frank, Steve, George, and Edmund Holecek; his sisters, Minnie Bjorklund, Helen Meech, Ethel Rohweller, Frances Boock, and Margaret Harris
